  • UK: RED LIST, 792,000 pairs summer (declining) BTO
  • UK: Resident Breeder, Passage/Winter Visitor . Mostly absent in Scottish Highlands & Islands
  • WI: Rare passage visitor (less than 30 records)
  • Breeds: Europe, Asia
  • Winters: South of breeding range to Africa, Asia
  • Habitat: Open countryside preferably with tall cover - bushes or hedgerows. Grassland.
  • Bunting - Male bright yellow head & below. Brown back (streaked black). Rump chestnut. Flight: shows white outer tail feathers. Perches singing in tops of tall bushes.
  • Diet: Seeds (summer, insects)
  • Listen to a Yellowhammer (RSPB site) "little bit of bread and no cheese!"
  • Similar birds: Yellow Wagtail
